Treating Morton's Neuroma
Burning pain in the ball of your foot, tingling between your toes, or the feeling that you have a pebble inside your shoe can all be signs of Morton's neuroma. Morton's neuroma, also known as an intermetatarsal neuroma, is a painful condition involving a nerve in the forefoot. It most commonly affects the area between the third and fourth toes. Despite its name, it is not a true tumor. Repeated pressure and irritation can cause thickening of the tissue surrounding the nerve.
Symptoms may include:
Burning, sharp, or aching pain in the ball of the foot
Numbness or tingling between the toes
Pain that travels toward the toes
A sensation of a pebble or bunched-up sock under the foot
Symptoms that worsen in narrow shoes, high heels, or during activities such as running
Why Does Morton's Neuroma Develop?
Morton's neuroma can have several contributing factors. Tight or narrow footwear can increase pressure on the forefoot, while running, jumping, and other repetitive activities may place additional stress on the area. Foot mechanics and conditions such as bunions or flat feet may also contribute. In some cases, there is no obvious cause.
How Is Morton's Neuroma Treated?
Treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms and what is contributing to the nerve irritation. Conservative treatment may include switching to shoes with a wider toe box, modifying activities that aggravate symptoms, using appropriate padding, and considering custom orthotics to help redistribute pressure. Ice may also provide temporary symptom relief.
If symptoms continue despite these measures, your podiatrist may discuss injection therapy or other treatment options. In persistent cases that do not respond adequately to nonsurgical treatment, surgery may be considered. Surgical options can include removing the affected portion of the nerve or releasing tissue to reduce compression, depending on the individual case.
